The TeleRehaB DSS clinical protocol and its integrated eHealth Literacy Tool were presented at the 11th Panhellenic Conference on Biomedical Technology (ELEVIT 2025)—the most prominent biomedical engineering event in the Greek scientific community. The session, titled “Digital Intervention in the Management of Balance Disorders”, explored how digital innovation can support prevention, rehabilitation, and personalised care for individuals at risk of falling.
A Digital Approach to Balance Disorders
Falls and balance impairments are a significant cause of reduced autonomy among older adults. TeleRehaB addresses this challenge through an AI-based Clinical Decision Support System (DSS), capable of assessing fall risk and designing personalised interventions by combining clinical, behavioural, and socio-demographic data.
During the session, Professor Dimitris Kikidis from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens introduced the protocol in detail, highlighting its dual-mode design for both clinical use and training in home settings.
Key Innovations Presented
The presentation by Dr Theodoros Vagenas (ICCS, NTUA) offered a comprehensive review of international digital tools supporting balance rehabilitation. Key highlights included:
- Wearables and sensors (e.g., IMUs, smart insoles, head-worn sensors) for real-time movement tracking and feedback
- AR/VR platforms and exergaming for engaging and gamified rehabilitation routines
- Mobile applications for education, monitoring, and personalised daily exercise routines
- AI-powered monitoring to adapt interventions in real time and enhance outcomes
The Role of eHealth Literacy
One of TeleRehaB’s most forward-looking components is its eHealth Literacy Tool, developed to assess patients’ technological readiness. It combines interactive digital tasks (swipe, type, drag & drop) and validated questionnaires (eHEALS, STAM, MDPQ) to tailor interventions based on digital skills—an essential feature for ensuring engagement, particularly among older adults.
Looking Ahead
The future of fall prevention and rehabilitation lies in scalable, intelligent, and user-friendly digital tools. As demonstrated at ELEVIT 2025, TeleRehaB is helping shape this future by combining AI, wearable technologies, clinical insight, and digital literacy into a single, interoperable system.
